High School at St. Eunan's College, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, Ireland.

1951-57:

Undergraduate studies in philosophy & theology at Stonebridge Priory, the Major Seminary of the Servites, a Roman Catholic religious order, in Lake Bluff, Illinois, USA

1957-59:

Graduate studies at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, the theological seminary of the National University of Ireland, in Kildare, Ireland. Doctorate in Divinity (D.D.) granted in June, 1959. Thesis published in required summary format as Imago Dei. A Study in Philo and St. Paul. Rome: Gregorian University Press, 1961

1959-61:

Post-doctoral studies in exegesis at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome.
Diploma as Sacred Scripture Licentiate (S.S.L) granted in June, 1961.

1965-67:

Post-doctoral studies in archeology at the École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem (then in Jordan). Study visits to all the main sites in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco. Diploma as Elève titulaire de l'Ecole Biblique, granted in June, 1966.
